Unlikely contests

Competition as a way of finding out what somebody will give up, when the thing being won is not a trophy anybody else recognises. A Donkey Kong high score, a spelling bee, a Harlem ballroom, a machine that plays Go better than the man who held the title, an Irish television contest that judged women on their cooking and their marriages. The prize is almost never worth it, which is never the point.
