Yarn Documentary Club

Here at Yarn HQ we love documentaries. The artform has exploded in my lifetime with the widespread availability of affordable digital cameras and editing software, easy access to archival and found footage and the advent of new distribution methods. I was 15 in 2001 when I saw the skateboarding documentary; Dogtown and Z-Boys. The film blew my mind. I realised a documentary could be as exciting and as slick as any feature film. I was hooked ever since.

On these shelves is a personal collection of my favourite documentaries, made in my lifetime. I’ve grouped them by theme for my own amusement but also with the idea that someday we may make this list into a podcast series, each episode will focus on a theme. Each one also gets a star rating out of three, again for my own amusement. It follows the Michelin method, so one star is not a low score: everything on this list is worth watching, and the stars only say how far out of your way to go for it.

This is an ever evolving list and will be added to so suggestions are always welcome.
